Charlton Kings, near Cheltenham.
This is plan number 59 from a series
of 60 which mapped the proposed railway from
Southampton to Cheltenham. This particular map shows a proposed branch
to join with the London, Oxford and Cheltenham
Railway.
Some of the features shown include various
Turnpike Roads with the Charlton Kings Turnpike Gate on the road to Cheltenham,
Ham Dairy, Red Lion Pub, the proposed London Oxford and Cheltenham Railway, footpaths and field layouts.
The plots of land adjacent to the proposed
Southampton and Manchester branch line are
numbered and also supplied with the print
will be a copy of the relevant pages from
a directory which accompanies the original
plan. For each numbered plot this gives details
of the property, its ownership, lessee and
occupier. For example Plot 102 adjacent to the
Oxford:Cheltenham turnpike is describes as
"House, yard, gardens and outbuildings"
owned by Chalotte Shill and occupied by Richard
Matthews . The plan thus provides
details of the social history of the location
over 160 year ago.
