Lower Clatford, Hampshire.
This is plan number 16 from a series
of 60 which mapped the proposed railway from
Southampton to Cheltenham in 1846.
Some of the features shown include the settlement
of Lower Clatford itself with individual dwellings and Mill.
The church of Upper Clatford is shown at the right edge of the map adjacent
to Norman Court Farm. The Redbridge and Andover Canal passes across the map and through Lower
Clatford and adjacent to the River Anton on which are Paper Mills. Parts of the Parishes of both Upper and
Lower Clatford are shown along with an area
described as "otherwise Goodworth Clatford". The Parish of Wherwell is at the left hand edge of the map. Parish
boundaries are marked as are many field divisions.
The plots of land adjacent to the proposed
railway are numbered and also supplied with the print will be a copy of
the relevant pages from a directory which
accompanies the original plan. For each numbered
plot this gives details of the property,
its ownership, lessee and occupier. For example
Plot 102 is described as, "Flour
Mill, House, Barn, Road and Outbuildings"
owned by The Baroness de Tuyll and her Trustees and occupied by Thomas
Dowling.
The plan thus provides details of the social
history of the location, and who lived around
Lower Clatford and the lands to the south
of Andover, over 160 years ago.
